Flap Rudder
Application
The flap rudder consists of one main and one auxiliary rudder. The auxiliary rudder rotates with the main one through a transfer mechanism to let the spade get a bigger arc. A rudder consists of a blade with a mechanically or hydraulically activated trailing edge flap. The trailing edge flap produces a variable angle as a function of the rudder angle.
Flap rudders deliver high-lift per rudder angle and better maneuverability than conventional rudders of similar shape, size, and area. Flap rudders are more and more used on ships because of their good rudder turning effect and simple structure. In the current flap rudder, the rotation of the wing rudder is driven by the push rudder linkage mechanism.
Advantages and Features
1. The part of the rear of the rudder blade is made into a rudder with flaps that can be independently controlled by the follower mechanism.
2. A rudder with a sub-rudder blade that can be independently controlled by a follower mechanism is attached to the rear of the main rudder blade. The rudder is the flap.
3. Improves operation safety of the ship.
4. Improves rudder control and turning performance of the ship.
5. Increases lift coefficient by 1.5 to 1.8 times that of conventional rudders.
